Remember Who You Are

This is Grandma Shirley. Grandma has a way of making everyone around her feel loved and important. Heavenly Father decided to take Grandma Shirley home on Friday, February 10, 2012. It's been a heartbreaking experience. My grandparents are supposed to live forever. Wednesday night was the last time my grandma spoke to me. She opened her eyes long enough to see it was me, immediately told me she loved me, gave me a kiss, said, "Thank you, I love you" and then went back to sleep.
Things about Grandma:
- Grandma loved horses! Some of my most prized possessions are 2 pictures I have of Grandma and me riding horses together in Canada when I was little.
- Grandma introduced us to weird food combinations, that are actually quite tasty. Examples: Toast with melted cheese and strawberry jam on top, toast with cottage cheese and Salad Supreme. I resisted trying them for a long time, but there was one night I spent the night with Grandma and Grandpa and Grandma got up to make breakfast the next morning and insisted I try cheese toast with strawberry jam. One word: YUM! I still eat it to this day.
- Grandma would sneak us treat bags every time we left her house, even if our parents had said no.
- Mentholatum... Grandma should have bought stock in the company. And, if your lips were a little chapped just give Grandma a kiss. She had enough Mentholatum on for all of us.
- Grandma had more patience than anyone I'd ever met, except sometimes with Grandpa.
- Grandma taught me to crochet when I was younger.
- Grandma loved to shop, and I seriously think it was a genetic trait passed down to several of us in the family.
- Grandma has a tender heart.
- Grandma is a princess!
- Grandma loves EVERYONE! Anyone who walked in the house was instantly welcomed and made to feel like one of the family. Grandma and Grandpa hosted several foreign exchange students from Japan, and their families were always welcome to come visit. These students hold a very dear place in the hearts of my grandparents.
- Grandma always knew what I needed before I did, like a cool washcloth on my forehead during a really terrible night.
- Grandma's relationship with her siblings is something to be envied, even though most of them have been in another country.
- Because of Grandma I know my great-aunts and great-uncles and a zillion cousins. I have never met anyone who is as richly blessed with relationships with an extended family as I am.
- Grandma's Words of Wisdom usually included, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." "Will this really matter in 5 years?" and most famously, "Remember who you are!"
- Grandma loves Grandpa. Whenever they were close enough they were always holding hands.

I wish everyone could know Grandma Shirley. She's an amazing woman and will be sorely missed.
I love you Grandma!
